Author in our midst: My Cafe Cubano
Thank you Barb for submitting and publishing an article in the AJC about my debut novel, My Cafe Cubano. For those of you who want to learn more about Cuba and/or how communism and Castro completely destroyed a generation, way of life and country, check out http://www.mycafecubano.com/
Political importance: Atlas Shrugged
With the upcoming presidential elections in 2008, it is imperative that every U.S. citizen read Atlas Shrugged by Ayn Rand. This book would stop "the female running for president who shall not be named" dead in her tracks. How can this country even consider putting a moocher and user in the most revered post of Commander in Chief? Haven't we had enough already? It's time every individual became a productive member of society and stopped expecting handouts from the government. Hasn't the world learned that COMMUNISM DOESN'T WORK!
Must-read book: One Thousand White Women
One Thousand White Women by Jim Fergus is our only "unofficial" reading as a book club. I stumbled upon this book at a local library used book sale and bought it because the cover looked interesting. The book simply blew me away! I could not stop raving about it and have recommended it over and over to friends, readers and fellow Lofthouse members. We have passed the book around the membership over the past year, and everyone loves it.
Most discussion-provoking book: The Kite Runner
Our best discussion as a group stemmed from reading The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini. Everyone reacted so strongly to the book -- angry, devastated, shocked. I finished the book at 6 PM and went straight to bed because I couldn't stop crying. It's not a book I will ever recommend to someone else because reading it affects every fiber of your being.
